NM Legislative Finance Committee Population Trends

Over the last decade, New Mexico’s population growth stagnated compared with the United States and neighboring states – growing only 2.8 percent while the country’s population grew by 7.4 percent and the population in neighboring states grew by 14.2 percent. New Mexico’s population growth was concentrated in the over 65 age group, and regionally, in urban areas and in the Permian Basin (both likely associated with economic activity).
